I love horror games and I love RPGs though recently I've grown to hate most RPGs *points to majority of recent releases*
However a friend of mine told me of a game he downloaded that never came to America, something about the censoring would be impossible to do, way too much gore, and horrible images. Well of course I did kinda believe this because America has always had this thing where 'GORE BAD! CLEAN GOOD!' when it comes to games (but oddly enough not movies) Now he tells me it's a horror game that's a RPG. There aren't many of those, I love older platform RPGs, and well if censors didn't want it over here I'm curious. This is like Clock Tower (not the PS1 version, the very first one!) I adored it, I love the man who made the English patch for it, and I hate the fact it didn't come over here cause if I had it as a child when the SNES was still new I'd probably to this day be scared to go anywhere near blonde children and/or gardening clippers.
Sweet Home is said Japanese video game. It was released for the NES, or Famicom due to where it was only released. You start off as 5 people going into this mansion to take photos of the last paintings a artist did because he went missing for so long no one knows what his last works look like. So this kids go in, have a camera because the artist painted on the walls, not a canvas and frame like most. Well the kids go in, the entrance comes down and a ghostly woman tells you you're gonna die. Already ooky spooky and things as soon as you enter the door are popping out and screaming OOGA BOOGA BOOGA!!! at yah. Well you're trapped in the mansion cause some lady ghost who can't cross over cause she's pissed off at herself and everyone all cause when her child came to age to walk he went into a heater, she didn't know the baby was in there, turned it on, and killed her baby. That's pretty fucking morbid considering as I played I found the room with said heater and the babies ghost was talking to me! Anyway, this woman has been killing people to make play mates for her baby to play with in the afterlife, thus she's turned her house into a haunted maze of horrors and general 'WTF IS GOING ON!' moments.
Now as you play you have 5 characters as I stated. Each one has something special. There is the guy with the camera, who uses the camera to take pictures of the paintings and the paintings give you hints each time you take a picture that tell you where to go or what to do. There is your team leader, who has a lighter you'll use to burn things that are in the way. A young nurse who has a medical kit to help you. A part time maid who for some reason felt she had to bring her vacuum with her but that was a good move cause sometimes you have to use it. Then there is some bitch who doesn't have a job but has a key that can open any door almost (save for a Iron gate and another I think) It's a fun cast of jobs but you don't get any info on them. That's fine and dandy with me cause I'm too worried about stomping some zombies, kicking the shit out of spirits, and just getting the bloody fuck out of this place before psycho ghost woman comes back and decides to fling me into the heater with her dead baby.
Now we all know how RPGs go when their turn based. You select what to do. You attack, you pray (which is like magic all characters use), you use a item, or you run. Simple choices. Through out the house you find different weapons and you can switch them out to make stronger attacks with is fun cause I spent a good bit figuring out what was a weapon or not, what did the best damage, and wonder in general why the fuck a pitchfork is the best weapon when a sword isn't. I would think a sword would be better for messing up zombies, ghouls, and crazed hounds instead of a pitchfork but what do I know. I'm not trapped in this mansion.
Well here's a element I actually enjoy because if it wasn't there this game would be too easy and won't make me panic or be super careful when a character is near death. Once a character dies, they ani't coming back. Absolutely no. No phoenix down for you! And another thing is you find tonics with heals everyone. This is a great item if it weren't for the fact there's only a total of 20 in the game, or that's what my friend told me. This really makes me think out what the fuck I'm gonna do! I can't go in there guns ablazin' in here and just think a splash of water will wake up my friends. No, don't work that way. I love this too because it gives me a challenge. I must manage my characters well, I gotta watch everyone. I don't want my camera man dying cause he helps me find out where to go, the nurse dispite being the weakest in everything is on the top of the list of 'Mother fuckers I want around at all times!' so she is the one I worry about the most! Given I don't keep her in the main party I never have her too far from them.
Another thing, you have 5 characters but the most in a party you can have is 3. This means 2 have to group up by themselves and follow the others. Cool idea, no problem with it. So you gotta pick who's gonna be with who. Of course my favorite is the camera man, the pyro with the lighter, and the chick with key cause their the best characters and if they encounter something they just spank it and go about their business. However it's the party of two I worry about but still keep them in high spirits cause it has the nurse, she'll just pop open her first aid kit!
Because only 3 people can be together at once you can pick to mix and match your teams. You could have 3 teams of 2 people and go about it like that or solo everyone if you feel like you have the biggest balls of them all. But none the less you will be switching characters to go back and forth between teams and have them follow each other. Once in a while it's best to have one character split off and go mess with a trap by himself but over all it's good to be in teams. This makes the battling either easy or scary at moments as well thus another bonus.
Now I've already beat the game but I had to have a friend tell me this. You can't beat the final boss without 4 certain items. Without them she'll keep wailing on you, you can't go past certain points in the battle, and she'll never die. I won't spoil anything but each item had a certain connection to the dead woman such as something her husband used, related to her baby, and more. You'll probably have to look up a online guide to figure out what they are, my friend told me and he had to use guides too.
Now so far the game is good. Given it's like most RPGs from that time where the random battles are all way too often but still, other then too many random battles it's a fun spooky game. Here's something I love as well is this is before Resident Evil but this is the prototype of that series! Everytime you enter a door, you see a opening animation (same with RE), you battle zombies and undead dogs in the mansion (again RE!), and of course you're trapped in a mansion searching for clues and way out...... Wow, it's just the first RE but with ghosts and no guns!
So of course looking at it one could say Capcom took this old game, redid it a bit and plopped out our favorite zombie shooting series of theirs. This really made me enjoy the game because just like it there were moments that made me jump and more.
To those with emulators I recommend this game. For those who love horror, I too recommend it. If you like RPGs with strange puzzles this is also your game. If you're like me and love a mix of horror and RPG well it won't disappoint!
Overall I'm upset Capcom hasn't done anything with this game since it's release other then use it for a stepping stone to RE, it never making it to America, and one of those forgotten games in time that deserve a little attention.
Now this is a NES game so don't expect to be spoiled with really spooky graphics. Now there is a scene you see a really detailed look of a man letting himself get killed to save you. His skin melts off and even the bones get damaged from it and it's just so damn nasty watching the meat fall off. However, as I stated with todays graphics we can be spoiled with really detailed and gross scenes while here it's a above view similar to Final Fantasy in a way. However the atmosphere for it's time it's scary and even freaky. I enjoyed the graphics and there is a enemy called A Man (which is a man) that scared me the first time I saw him move in battle cause I wasn't expecting him to! For a NES game they went into great detail so the graphics are fun.
The battle system is nothing short of a FF style battle, just no magic spells but replaced with Praying. Unlike FF however there is no magical item that brings you back from the dead so once someone dies they are forever lost and you can't get them back. This makes the battling a bit harder knowing that and makes you watch yourself thus it keeps the battle from being boring.
The only downside to this game is the battles come way too often and will really slow you down far more then needed. You can literlly take one step once in you go through a new door and a battle will pop up. While it's really easy for everyone to run away you still have to do about a million battles before you even get half way through the game.
Overall a great game, fun story, and well spook you atleast once. I recommend it and give it a 8 out of 10.
